After 1 year of research & development, we are glad to make available our Hawley liner reproductions for collectors and reenactors !
Hawley fibre liners were commonly used during the early war period. In fact, it is difficult to do an early war impression without one... They were extensively used by the USMC in the Pacific (Guadalcanal, Gilbert and Marshall Islands, etc).
Question is whether you want to use a real one for reenacting? They are quite rare, very fragile, and especially the ones in good and usable condition have become very pricy...
With this super durable and functional resin repro, no need to worry about taking your fragile and priceless cardboard liner into the rain and mud during reenactments.
Set includes :
LINER SHAPE :
Unlike many Hawley reproductions available on the market today, this is NOT a high-pressure or post-WW2 converted liner. This repro liner was molded from an original WW2 Hawley model. So the very distinctive dome and brim silouhettes are faithfully reproduced. The very common deformed shape of the liner around the rivets holding the suspension is also reproduced. Even the structure of the outer fabric and the small cracks on the brim of the original master model are visible !
Original Hawley liners were made of compressed cardboard fibre, and covered with a cloth stretched over their outer surface, tucking under the rim into a bevel (a key characteristic of all Hawley liners). They were fairly fragile and prone to breakage, and could be damaged easily if they got wet. For durability purpose during reenactments, this repro Hawley liner is made of solid resin.
LINER COLOR :
Most Hawley liner resin repros available on the market today are made of white or transparent resin, then sprayed inside and out with OD paint. We tried that too in the first place, but this has a major drawback : paint may wear off and scratch over time where it comes into contact with your steel shell, revealing the white/transparent resin beneath. After further research and development, we managed to color the resin itself prior to casting. This achieves a more permanent stability of the surface color, and ensures a better durability of the liner.
Original Hawley liners are two-colored. The outside cloth is khaki green, and the inside fibre is painted OD green. Depending on condition, original Hawley liners outer cloths have a wide variety of shades : going from dark green to light khaki green (almost beige or grey). Reproducing the right colors was tricky. We decided to go for an "olive grey" color on the outside, and OD green on the inside (to mimic the contrast between the outer cloth and the inner fiber). Some may think the outer color is perfect, some may think it's too light... Feel free to repaint the outside of the liner as you like if necessary 😉
WEBBING / SUSPENSION :
Transitional Hawley liners had HBT suspension, riveted onto the body with unpainted "A" washers. Our repro suspension features a quality HBT webbing (OD3, triple weaves), and correct "A" washers.
HEADBAND :
Transitional Hawley liners with HBT suspension had adujstable headbands. Headband IS NOT INCLUDED in this set. For reference purposes only. We consider that this part is quite easy to get from different suppliers, and many of you already have original ones at home 😉
CHINSTRAP :
The first pattern fixed leather chinstrap is made by one of our suppliers, with a quality genuine leather piece.
ATTENTION :
⚠️ We recommend you to avoid installing and removing the liner hundreds of times from your M1 steel pot. The outer "fabric texture" of the resin may wear off where it comes into contact with your steel shell. This is normal and just like with original Hawleys : texture is not indestructible. Just install the liner in the steel shell, and leave it there.
⚠️ We also recommend you to avoid fastening and unfastening the snaps of the nape strap. Snaps are stiff, and you could weaken the webbing where the snaps are attached. In fact, you don't need to detach nape strap. Just leave it in place for better durability.
⚠️ This Hawley liner repro is more solid and durable than original cardboard ones. However it is not indestructible. Take care of it like you would with a real one. Of course it may break if your helmet falls on the floor.
⚠️ This Hawley repro is not a factory mass-produced liner. It is 100% handmade by us from A to Z, and therefore not 100% "perfect". For example, resin may have some minor molding defects on the outside, or some traces of sanding on the inside. Each piece is unique. No surprises, you buy the exact model presented in photo. We try to show as many details as possible on photos. If you have a specific question regarding one detail or element, do not hesitate to ask us before buying, we'll be glad to send you some more photos.
⚠️ We cannot guarantee that the color you see on photos accurately portrays the true color of the product. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colors and that everyone sees these colors differently. We try to edit our photos to show the products as life-like as possible, but please understand the actual colour may vary slightly from your monitor.
⚠️ There are a few other manufacturers making repro Hawley liners and parts. We cannot guarantee that our parts (liner shell, webbing, nape strap, snaps, etc.) are compatible with other original or repro liner parts available on the market.
⚠️ Just like the real deal, this repro Hawley liner will fit WW2-era high-dome M1 steel shells. We cannot guarantee it will fit post-WW2 low-dome M1 shells and clones.
⚠️ M1 steel shell visible on photos is not included. Only for reference. You buy the liner.
